VetSource – What’s that?

cat_fluffy_box_66380_1920x1200-700x437We all know that life can be chaotic at times. How often do you find yourself looking online to order something simply because you do not have the time to go to the store in person? There’s almost an online store for everything you could ever need nowadays. The same goes for your pet’s food, treats, toys, & even their prescriptions.

There are numerous places that you can order your pet’s supplies online, 1800PetMeds, chewy.com, even Amazon! While this is great & more than convenient, things get a little murky when it comes to prescription drugs, preventatives, & diets.

Given the growing impact that online pharmacies have had, it is our duty as your pet’s veterinarians to offer a safe place for you to order your pet’s prescriptions through. That’s where VetSource comes in.

What is VetSource?

VetSource is the only industry-approved home delivery provider for your pet’s medications, foods, & other products. Their items come directly from the manufacturers, so you know exactly where your products have come from. While this may not be important for something like clothes or shoes that you’ve ordered online, it is absolutely crucial when it comes to prescriptions.

“Out of almost 12,000 websites that NABP (National Association of Boards of Pharmacy) reviewed, more than 95% of them operate out of compliance with pharmacy laws and practice standards that protect the public health.”

When ordering from other places, the manufacturer cannot guarantee the authenticity of the product, that it was stored or handled properly, etc. So if there ends up being an issue with the product, the manufacturer isn’t able to help unless it was purchased through an authorized retailer. You’re then at the mercy of that site’s customer service department. This goes for human medications as well, not just pet products.

More options = Better medicine

While the safety of your pets is the primary reason we’ve decided to have a VetSource pharmacy, the wide array of available products was a close second. In clinic, we’re limited to what we can physically carry. If we decided to carry every brand of heartworm prevention there was, there would be no room for anything else in the clinic! But with VetSource, we’re able to offer medications, diets, preventatives, & other products that we would not be able to offer to you otherwise. We are also able to offer a wider variety of sizes on some products. Overall, this allows us to practice the best medicine that we can for your beloved pets.

All orders that contain a prescription item comes to us to approve before VetSource will ship it. This is to ensure that all of the information is correct: The product, size, quantity,  dosing instructions, & so on. This allows for us to approve a set number of refills for the item as well. Once we’ve approved it on our end, VetSource gets the green light to charge your card & ship out your items! You’re not charged until your item ships.

VetSource is able to offer discounts directly from the manufacturers. You can still receive rebates on your purchases on flea & heartworm prevention. There are even some discounts available on auto-shipped orders.

That’s right! You’re able to set up your pet’s prescriptions on an auto-shipping schedule. You place the order, select how often you would like for it to be shipped to your house, & that’s it! The product will ship out automatically for the amount of refills that it’s been approved for.

VetSource also offers a “Remind Me” program with your pet’s monthly preventatives. They will ship out a single dose of the preventative the same day of every month. This will come to you the same time every month & help as an added reminder to give the preventative. These have free shipping as well! You’re more than welcome to purchase full boxes if you would like, but this is a wonderful tool for those that need just a little extra help with remembering to give the product.

Most orders ship for free as well! Free shipping is offered on all diets, auto-ship orders, & on orders over $49.

Oh no – We’ve changed my dog’s food & I just placed an order!

That’s ok! Contact the VetSource customer service & they’ll be more than happy to help you out. They can help you change the product & also credit you back for anything that may have already been shipped out. Same goes for if your pet refuses to eat the food that was ordered. All Purina, Royal Canin, & Hill’s Science Diet foods have a 100% palatability  guarantee. If your pet, for whatever reason, declines to eat the food, you can get your money back. You don’t even have to go through the hassle of shipping the food back. You can either donate it to a shelter or dispose of it.

unleashed-paws-get-carded miniature-dachshund-in-a-mail-boxWhat if I don’t want to make an account?

No problem! We can process the order for you in clinic or over the phone. We can do a one-time order or set up auto-shipping for you. VetSource is designed to be an convenient as possible for our clients. However you want to do it, we can do it.

Does this mean I can’t purchase my pet’s ___________ from you anymore?

Not necessarily. However, this is the case with some products. Some products, such as Galliprant and Sileo Gel, are too expensive for us to carry in clinic. In some cases, VetSource is able to offer these products for less than we could.

We are working on downsizing the amount of food that we have on hand. So please be sure to call the clinic to check our stock before running out of food. The plan is to eventually only have the smaller bags of dry food & some cases of cans in clinic. Larger bags will eventually be discontinued in clinic & only available online for home delivery. This will allow for more room to have more options in clinic for your pet to try before ordering it online.

sBut not to worry! We make sure that any product that we decide to stop carrying in clinic is available through VetSource first! We also do our best to inform everyone about the decision ahead of time as well.

We’re very excited about this & we hope that you are, too! We want to offer the most for you & your pets. Check out our store & take a look around! You can also visit VetSource’s website for more information. If you have any questions or concerns, we’re happy to help!

Hey girl, nice place you got there…

Having a pet is amazing. The love, understanding, companionship… You love your pet so much that you don’t even think twice about picking up after them. They’re our fuzzy four-legged children and they’re just the greatest.

Mind if I move in?

Fleas think that your pet is just the greatest too. They also think that your carpet, furniture and yard are pretty sweet and they all want to live there. Fleas thrive in humid environments and, unfortunately, we’re in Houston, Texas which is humid most of the year.

It only takes one flea to cause a huge problem. A single flea can lay up to 5,000 eggs in its lifetime, which is about 40-50 eggs per day. Eggs can take anywhere from two days to two weeks to hatch, depending on weather. Once the egg hatches, the larvae will seek out dark places to grow. The larvae then develop into a cocoon-like pupae stage. These are the hardest to kill as they are incredibly tough – most pesticides will not kill them. Pupae can remain dormant for weeks, months, even years before hatching. Once they hatch, the adult flea emerges and then goes to feast on your pet and make more fleas. This life cycle takes only about 90 days.

Along with environmental factors, there are plenty of things that you can do to help ensure that a flea infestation is not in your future. The first place to start would be to make sure that all of your pets are on some kind of flea prevention. Every pet in the house hold needs to be on something, regardless as to whether they go outside or not. Fleas are crafty and will sneak in on clothes or shoes. Their eggs are very stick as well and can be easily transported by sticking to things.

There are many types of flea preventatives on the market. With so many options, how do you know which one is right for your pet and their lifestyle? Here are some of the basics that you need to know to help you decide.

Topical Preventatives – Canine

An important thing to remember with all topical preventatives is to not apply them when your pet is wet. They should be applied either 48 hours before or 24 hours after a bath. Make sure that you are bathing your pet with a pet shampoo that is soap or detergent free. Human shampoos are designed to cut oil and grease and will wash the product off of your pet. Most medicated shampoos can strip the preventative from your pet as well. If your pet is being treated with a medicated shampoo, ask your veterinarian if you need to change to an oral preventative during treatment. Be sure to remove all collars or harnesses until the product is completely dry.

While there are numerous types of topicals available, our doctors recommend using Vectra 3D for dogs. Vectra 3D is waterproof once dry and it does not break down in sunlight. It both kills and repels fleas, ticks, mosquitoes. It also prevents against some flies, mites, and lice as well. Vectra 3D will also kill whatever stage of the flea your dog comes into contact with – eggs, larvae, pupae, everything!

Vectra 3D is easy to apply as well. Simply part the hair at the base of the tail and using the applicator tip, squeeze the tube gently while working up the back towards the neck – “From rear to ear.” Once applied, it will begin to absorb into the sebaceous sweat glands of their body and translocate.

When this is happening, your dog may feel a tingling sensation. This may cause them to want to roll around on the floor, furniture, grass, etc. Do your best to keep your dog distracted so that they don’t roll around. This could cause them to rub off the product and cause it to not be as effective. Take them for a walk, play with a toy, do something to keep them busy for at least 15 minutes while the product is absorbed. Vectra 3D is toxic to cats, so if you have both in the house, be sure to keep them away from each other while it dries.

Topical Preventatives – Felines

All cats should be on some kind of flea prevention, regardless as to whether they go outside or not. Our doctors also recommend all cats to be on a heart worm preventative as well. While cats are not a natural host for heart worms like dogs, they can still contract them. There is currently no heart worm treatment available for cats, so we want everyone to be fully protected.

revBecause of this, our doctors recommend using Revolution for cats. Revolution is a topical that is applied once every 30 days. It kills fleas, prevents heart worms, deworms for some intestinal parasites, and can be used to treat ear mites as well. It works through your cat’s blood stream, similar to oral preventatives.

It should be applied to the skin on the back of the neck, just high enough where your cat is not able to lick the medication. If you have multiple cats, be sure to keep them separate so that they do not lick it off of each other. Don’t forget to remove collars before applying. Once dry, your cats fur may be “crispy” for a couple of days where the medication was applied. This will go away on its own.

Another option is Catego. This is a topical flea and tick prevention, but it does not do anything for heart worm prevention. Catego is applied once every 30 days on the neck just like Revolution. It works similar to Vectra 3D and the fleas will die once they come in to contact with your cat’s skin. The fleas do not have to bite to die since it works through their skin.

Oral Preventatives

If you’re not comfortable with the idea of topical preventatives, oral preventatives are available as well.

Oral preventatives work much differently than topicals. These work through your pet’s bloodstream as opposed to their skin & hair follicles. This means that they work by killing the fleas that ingest your pet’s blood. They will not repel nor kill the other stages of the flea life cycle. In short, the fleas have to bite to die.

Our doctors have decided to carry Trifexis, Simparica, and Nexgard in clinic for our oral preventatives.

triTrifexis is for both heart worm and flea prevention. It also deworms for some intestinal parasites when given. This is a beef flavored chewable tablet that is given once every 30 days. Give it after your dog has eaten a full meal. This is not only easier on your dog’s stomach, but it also ensure that the medications are completely absorbed into your dog’s system. This is the only combination product that we carry in clinic for dogs.

simparicaSimparica is for flea and tick prevention. This is a liver flavored chewable tablet and it is also given once every 30 days. You can give this to your dog just like a treat or with a full meal, it doesn’t matter. Studies show that both medications in Simparica are just as effective at day 30 as they are on day 1, so that your dog is fully protected for the full 30 days.

nexgardNexgard is also for flea and tick prevention. This is a beef flavored chew (from the makers of Heartgard) and is given once every 30 days just like the others. You can give it either with a meal or just as a treat. Make sure that your dog does not swallow it whole as it will be better absorbed if it is chewed. Nexgard is also able to be used to treat certain types of mange.

There are oral preventatives available for cats as well, but we do not currently carry these in clinic.

If you’re using an oral preventative, you may still see fleas on your pet or in your house. This doesn’t mean that the product isn’t working! Don’t forget that these medications work through your pet’s bloodstream and that the fleas have to bite to die.

 True or False?

I only have to apply flea preventatives to my pets that go outside.

FALSE! Remember, it just takes one flea to cause a huge outbreak in your home. Flea eggs and larvae can be brought into the home on your shoes and clothing. Make sure that every pet in your house is on a preventative.

Fleas die back in the winter so I only have to treat my pets in the summer.

FALSE! Adult fleas can live outside in temperatures as low as 49 degrees! Also, since we’re in Houston, Texas it rarely gets cold enough here to truly cause the fleas to back off. We recommend each pet be on preventative year round for their health and to help prevent surprise infestations.

PuppyScratch_1024x1024There are numerous products on the market. The ones listed are the ones that our doctors recommend and that we carry in clinic. You’re welcome to choose whichever product you feel it right for you and your furry family. Other options are available through our online store as well. If you have any questions about fleas, preventatives, or what we would recommend, please feel free to contact the clinic.

When A Tiny Flea Becomes A BIG Problem

Combating fleas can be a difficult process for the best of us. Using these helpful tips will allow your home and pets to be flea free!
Don’t let fleas get in between you and your pet(s)! Using these helpful tips will allow your home and pets to be flea free!

By Jamie Greak

Have you ever come home and the only thing that has been on your mind all day is sitting on the couch cuddled up to your furry friend? Imagine that time is now and this is what you are doing- you plop down next to your loving pet, you take your hand to start petting him or her and look down… Aagh! All you see is tiny little fleas scurrying around!  What do you do?? You just applied the medicine a couple of days ago! Don’t worry; this happens to the best of us. Even though you are seeing fleas, don’t just assume that the flea preventative that you purchased from the clinic is not working; in order to ensure that these preventatives work properly, we need to make sure that they are being administered or applied correctly.

There are many topical preventatives available on the market for fleas. Vectra 3D for dogs is available for purchase at our clinic. It is waterproof, photo stable (meaning it does not break down in light), and will kill and repel fleas, ticks, flies, mosquitoes, lice and other mites and is easy to apply. Simply part the hair at the base of the tail and using the applicator tip, squeeze the tube gently while working up the back towards the neck, or from “From rear to ear” as we like to say. Once applied, the Vectra will begin to absorb into the sebaceous sweat glands of their body and translocate.  When this is happing your pet may feel a tingling sensation and will want to roll around on the grass, ground, couch, etc. If allowed to roll around or rub on the furniture, your pet will end up applying most of the preventative onto something else and thus it will not be as effective. After applying the Vectra 3D, be sure to keep your dog distracted for a good 15 minutes after application, so that the liquid can absorb. This can be done by taking your dog for a walk, throw the ball for them or give them a rawhide to chew. Other topical preventatives have different ways to applying them to your pet. Always read the instructions before applying.

Another important thing to remember with all topical preventatives is to not apply them when your pet is wet. They should be applied either 48 hours before or 24 hours after a bath. Also make sure that you are bathing your pet with a pet shampoo that is soap or detergent free. Human shampoos are designed to cut oil and grease and will wash the product off of your pet. Be sure to remove all collars until the product is dry.

Don’t forget about your cats! Just because they never go outside does not mean that they should not be protected too. Flea eggs and larvae can be brought into the house on your other pets, shoes and even the hem of your pants. Revolution for cats prevents heartworms, intestinal parasites, ear mites and fleas. It should be applied to the skin on the back of the neck, just high enough where your cat is not able to lick the medication. Cats can sometimes be difficult to keep distracted after applying the topical medicine. The best way that I found to do this is when it is time for them to eat or initiate them in play after application with a ribbon toy, laser pointer, etc.

If you are using an oral form of flea prevention such as Trifexis, Comfortis or Nexgard, make sure that your pet has eaten a full meal prior to giving the medication. This will ensure that the medicine is absorbed properly and will reach its maximum effectiveness. If you are using one of these medications and you are still seeing fleas on your pet, please remember that these types of preventatives only work once the flea has a blood meal, meaning the adult flea has to bite your pet in order for it to die.

Did you know that the fleas that you are seeing on your pet are only 5 to 10 percent of the whole population of fleas that live in your environment?!  Just because you are seeing fleas does not mean that the product is not working. There are likely thousands of fleas in your home and in your yard and the fleas that you are continuing to see on your pet are most likely new fleas. When the female flea has her first blood meal she will lay up to 50 eggs. In the female flea’s life time she can lay up to 5000 eggs. How do we fix this problem?  The truth is, there is no silver bullet for fleas! The flea life cycle is 90 days and as fleas continue to hatch out into the environment, you may continue to see them. In order for the products to kill the fleas, they must first come into contact with your pet. For optimal flea control it is ideal if you treat your environment as well. There are a variety of products on the market that are available to you and will help to eliminate the fleas in your home and yard.

When treating the inside of your home, be sure to think about where your pets spend most of their time. Where ever your pet spends most of his/her time will be a hot spot for flea activity. If yours is anything like mine, you will need to pay extra attention to the couch and even the bed. Because the flea eggs, larva and pupae are very sticky and hang out on any material and fabric until they can find a host to live on and dine, be sure to strip the bed of all covers, and sheets along with the comforters and bed skirt, also remove all pillow cases. You will need to wash all these items in very hot water. While you are washing your bedding, you will need to treat the bed. We carry a product at the clinic called Siphotrol Plus Spray. This spray can be used to spray down all sides of the mattress, box spring, under and behind the bed. In addition to spraying your bed make sure to treat all the other beds in your house and all furniture. Remove all cushions on the couch and spray beneath them and between the seams.  Don’t forget to spay underneath all the furniture as well.  Now let’s think about the carpet, you can use the Siphotrol Plus spray for all the carpet but it will be ideal if you were to take a powder treatment and sprinkle it onto the carpet. Flea Busters is a good product for this and can be sprinkled everywhere in the house including hard wood and vinyl floors.  It is safe, odorless and easy to apply. Follow the step by step directions found on the label when applying to carpet. When treating your hard wood flooring, sweep the powder around the floor so it can be worked in between the cracks in the flooring. Let it sit on the hard flooring for about an hour then you can take a mop and just PLAIN water and mop up extra powder.  When you vacuum make sure to throw away the bag or take the trash out immediately.  Another important thing to do is remove the filter of the vacuum and wash it. When you are having trouble with fleas in your home, Flea busters recommends increasing the frequency of vacuuming. The vibration from the vacuum will draw the fleas out of the pupae stage.

When treating your yard, it is best if you go to your neighborhood Lowes or Home Depot and get a product called, Bayer Advance. It comes in many forms including granules, sprays, and even hooks up to your water hose. If you have a large yard, you may want to call your local exterminator for recommendations. When you are treating your yard make sure that you treat everywhere your pet goes. If your furry friend has access under the house you will want to treat under there as well. While doing the outside also get the dog house, the garage, and the children’s play house. And don’t forget about the area under the big oak tree where he or she likes to rest under on sunny days. Also, don’t forget to treat your car if your pet rides with you to places. The Siphotrol Spray can be used to treat the inside of the car.

 True or False?

I only have to apply flea preventatives to my pets that go outside.

FALSE! Most people only think that flea prevention is for pets that are only outside—but remember it just takes 1 flea to cause a huge outbreak in your home. Flea eggs and larvae can be brought into the home on your shoes and clothing and any pets in the home that are not protected run the risk of getting fleas.

Fleas die back in the winter so I only have to treat my pets in the summer.

FALSE! Adult fleas can live outside in temperatures as low as 49 degrees. If the fleas are sheltered in your home, garage, etc. they will survive in even colder weather. The pupae stage of the flea life cycle will not die in any type of weather condition, and can live up to a year until weather conditions are ideal for them.  All flea preventions should be administered every 30 days in order to prevent infestations.

Using all these steps it will help you combat fleas all year long. If you have any questions or would like help deciding which preventatives are best for your pet(s), feel free to call or stop by the clinic and we would be happy to assist you!
